My Students

I serve a fun group of sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade scholars in a Title I school near Charlotte. Most of the scholars I teach come from low-income households, and over 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch but they are ready to learn each and every day. They receive government assistance and some are even homeless. They are lacking the most basic school supplies like paper and pencil. As teachers, we often provide these materials. Many times we pay for these out of our own pockets. These students come to school escaping circumstances many of us could never imagine dealing with as an adult. For many of them, school is a place of solace, a time of peace in a world of chaos.

My Project

My school is focusing on a collegiate mindset for our scholars. We have changed the names of some classes to fit the schoolwide college theme. We are implementing college tour Tuesdays where a different college is highlighted and scholars and staff wear college gear.

The dream of going to college is often an escape from current circumstances.

I want to give my students hope that they can go to college. I would like my classroom to fit the schoolwide college-ready theme. To do this, I plan to display college pennants over each table in my classroom. The students sitting at each table will represent that college. Materials form this project will help me to fit in with the schoolwide implementation and get my students thinking about going to college.
