My students need a scanner and printer with ink as soon as possible to start capturing their learning progress over time in the form of digital portfolios.

My Students
The fourth graders have so many amazing learning opportunities this year! To document their experiences, we need the technology, including a scanner to capture authentic evidence visually and a printer to develop presentation materials for student-led conferences.
Twenty-nine 4th grade students from diverse cultural backgrounds attend a math/science/technology magnet elementary school in an urban area of California.
Over 70% of the students have been identified as disadvantaged (Title I). The students communicate with each other via written, oral, and artistic means. This happens through the enrichment of activities that reach beyond basic textbooks, including the use of projects, communication with experts in various fields (face-to-face or through video conference), access to technology resources, expanded reading experiences such as book clubs and literature circles, and problem-solving scenarios.
My Project
I am excited that we have the opportunity to have fourth grade students develop digital portfolios. Images and written work from their participation in our project-based learning activity on ecosystems, recordings of their reading fluency from different periods of time throughout the year, and video demonstration of their thinking as they tackle mathematics problems all serve to make their digital portfolios into great collections of learning that they may continue to add to beyond first grade. The scanner and printer allow for their learning to be represented visually as they communicate their progress both digitally (on their electronic portfolio) and orally (through student-led conferences and showcase events).
Through your generous donation, my students will be able to set goals for improving their learning experiences based on self-evaluation that occurs from the creation of digital portfolios.
For example, students will be able to critique their reading and identify difficult word and letter patterns to study and subsequently increase their fluency. Sample work from the results of this donation will be prominently displayed on the classroom web page and their own digital portfolios.
