This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the thrill of watching a seed spout and slowly become a full fledge plant with flowers and then more seeds? Our students don't have this experience easily because they live in a high crime urban area....so soil quality is awful and ability to spend time outdoors is very limited.
In spite of our students limited time outdoors they are excited learners; eager to experience nature.
Their concern led to my hosting an after-school environmental club whose membership this year is 38 eager students. We took a one mile litter cleanup walk because of their concern for the trash in their neighborhood; collecting 11 LARGE contractor bags of trash in one hour. We are in the process of revitalizing our enclosed courtyard; this year planting donated annuals. In addition to the 38 students in our club, the 1st, 4th and 7th grade classrooms helped with planting, weeding and watering.
My Project
The soil testing kit would allow my students to check the life in our healthy soil over time; to study how it is when fresh as well as every season and compare how it changes. The seed starting soil will allow us to use the seeds we have harvested from this year's annual plants and start their growth in the classroom so that we can plant sturdy young plants when the weather warms. To begin with seeds in the soil outdoors in Chicago does not allow enough time for mature plant growth by summer's end. The clipboards will allow us to collect data, journal and analyze while outdoors in our garden courtyard. Currently we have to come back to the classroom to do writing because there are no tables in our courtyard and we don't have enough clipboards. Written work will be more accurate and detailed because they will be able to write while making observations and collecting data. They will act as scientists collecting real world data.
Please help our students act like scientists in an outdoor world that is safe and easily accessible for them.
Your support will engage them in their learning and make them more responsible environmentally sound citizens. Thank you!
