My students are fun, lovable, and excited about learning. They absolutely love hands-on, active, and engaging projects. They come to school each day ready to try new things. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating to ensure all their needs are met.
My Project
As a first grade teacher it is vital that our students' socio-emotional skills are developed so they are effectively able to communicate not only with me, but also their fellow classmates. Due to the pandemic, these students have not spent a “normal” year in a classroom, and have missed out on opportunities to fine tune these skills. I often see their struggle to effectively interact and communicate ideas, concerns, etc. to each other. To encourage effective communication, collaboration, and a positive classroom community, I could use tables instead of individual desks to encourage collaboration and communication on a variety of assignments.
I have a varied level of learners in the classroom and this would help me pair students who could use additional support with a classmate who could potentially grow their understanding, and engage them in their classwork.
These tables would also be a new material, which is often few and far between in a Title I elementary school. I would like them to know that they are worth investing in and I will continue to advocate for a supported learning environment for them.
The funding of this project will bring my ideal class setting to life. This project will provide my students additional support in a way I am not currently able to with our current desks. I would love to be able to incorporate tables into our classroom. Tables will be an asset in moving our class from a more traditional teacher centered style of learning, to a student centered style of learning. I believe this will cultivate their basic needs to help them reach their full potential as learners moving forward.
