My Students
Do you remember getting so excited to learn new things as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt exploring new concepts. My students share that excitement and joy in learning new things in the field of STEM. My students are inquisitive, voracious scientists who are excited to discover the newest engineering practices and to solve current problems in their community.
My students are impeccable, inquisitive avid readers and enthusiastic learners.
Students at my school are curious, compassionate, and creative. Diversity is very important amongst my students and they are truly valued. I am the science teacher at a middle school in an impoverished urban area.
Like everyone else we are trying to make science fun and engaging during a pandemic. Our school is hybrid with most students fully virtual due to limited class space allowing safe distancing for everyone.
My amazing students are often home caring for younger siblings because their parents are essential workers. Many of them have limited contact with peers and adults during the day. After 8 long months the isolation is taking its toll.
Help me bring some joy back to my students by allowing them to connect to each other.
My Project
Many of my middle school students are struggling with distance learning and with being alone. We are a Title I school and most parents are essential workers who must work outside the home. Many students are alone all day. This is difficult to tolerate as adults, but it is unbearable for middle school students.
Middle School Students need to connect with their peers and they need to learn to cooperate in groups, for their future but also for their current mental health.
BreakoutEDU offers over 800 standards-aligned games that require students to use their Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills as well as Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity (The 4C's).
The digital platform ensures that all students can participate, whether they are in class some of the time or at home all of the time. In this strange year even those students who are in class cannot work together in groups. Everyone is required to maintain 6-feet distancing and no shared materials are used. I realize I won't be able to use the physical kit until sometime in the future, but I want to have it on display in the classroom as a reminder to students that this is only temporary. We can have plans for the future and we can have hope.
Help me create a spark of joy in learning and a beacon of hope for all my students.
