Collaborative Learning Combination

My students need a printer in the classroom to publish their work, speakers to hear presentations, headphones and a splitter for collaborating on the computer, and games!

My Students

My students are hardworking, and need visual supports to be successful in learning new material. We share 2 computers, and they struggle to wait for their turn to use the technology. They will no longer have to wait for their turn and practice the social skills of turn taking.

I work with students with an autism diagnosis.

We are a substantially separate classroom. The goal is at the end of the two years these students spend with me, most will be able to transition into mainstream classrooms with success. I provide instruction in ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Social Skills. My classroom is in a large urban city with a fair amount of poverty.

My Project

We use an interactive reading program on the computer. Currently only 2 students at a time can participate. This leaves the others waiting for their turns. With headphone splitters and extra headsets, the students will be able to work collaboratively and wait time will be reduced. The games will help students work on their math and social skills. We are excited to begin publishing our stories and papers, but need a printer so that we don't lose class time walking down the hall to pick up our work. This printer in the room will also let me create and modify materials quickly so that students can get the proper instruction.

The students are excited by technology, the technology allows them to connect with the materials in a way that traditional teaching cannot touch.

One of my students remembers nearly every fact she learned from watching a Discovery Channel show on sea lions, and can recite them all after one viewing. I'd love for her to be able to learn like that in the classroom too. For my students, the more they can interact socially with others, the more they can practice their social skills.
