Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students so often these days have the idea that they "weren't born with the math gene," when in reality, math is something to be explored and created. My goal is that by the time students leave my classroom, they believe in themselves and are excited about doing math.
What students need more than anything are opportunities to grapple with engaging and rigorous math tasks.
Research shows that students are more likely to do math when they are standing at a vertical whiteboard. It states in Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Liljedahl that "When students work on whiteboards, they can quickly erase any errors, which, for them, reduces the risk of trying something." I am so excited to start implementing this research and facilitate students working on relevant and exciting math tasks in an innovative way.
Dry-erase cleaner will allow students to participate in vertical whiteboard tasks. Strong magnets will hold the dry erase sheets onto the walls so that students can stand up while working in groups. Patty paper will allow students to physically and visually move figures as they perform transformations next unit.
