My first grade classroom is a place where children learn to love school and learning. It includes children with autism spectrum disorder and other learning needs. I have been teaching for 22 years and I do not have a lot of variety in seating or furniture to meet my kiddos learning needs. The STEM table and seating I am requesting will meet the needs of all my students. The table will provide students with an area where they can stand to do their work and collaborate with their peers. The flexible seating will be easily accessible and at a 6-7 year old height (what I currently have that has been in our building for 50 years).
Students will have a voice and a choice and will be encouraged to take risks in an environment that is safe and engaging.
The STEM station and seating options will provide students the opportunity to choose where they work that meets their needs. Stools will be easy for children to move around the classroom- promoting a voice and a choice in seating!
The new seating will help children with their executive function needs, increase alertness level for better attention to tasks, and help their motor development. Having this kind of seating in the classroom will enrich the learning opportunities for my students with (or without) special needs promoting inclusivity for all learners.
