Science is not a work by yourself subject. In science class, we work in groups to explore topics and find connections to our everyday lives. We do a lot of group work and collaboration but when it comes to documenting what was done students struggle. Part of the struggle is committing to writing something on paper and the fear of being wrong. We will use the whiteboards to help us write our lab reports and document what was done in activities. The ability to write where it can be easily erased will give the students freedom to try out different thoughts and ways to explain what they noticed or learned without having to commit to it by writing on their paper where it is harder to erase.
My students are more willing to attempt to answer questions and document what happened when they can write on a white board because they know they can erase it easily so mistakes are OK.
Our current white boards are very small and students have to do the assignment in pieces. It would be wonderful to have larger white boards so they could document all pieces at the same time and see how everything connects. I have seen students grow in their communication skills and their ability to take risks in the classroom when they have the ability to write on a surface that easy to erase if they make a mistake.
