This year, I finally had to get rid of our very old rug in my Science room. I would like to replace it with carpet squares that are easier to clean and that we can put away when we do not need them.
I teach science in a school in Brooklyn with a 57% poverty rate.
I work with 250 second grade to fifth grade students. My students are always full of questions. They enjoy doing experiments in class, observing, manipulating materials, measuring, and making predictions. They love to learn how scientists gather and share information.
My Project
At the beginning of each class, I meet with my students to share books or talk about their ideas and plan what they are going to investigate. For our meetings, my students sit on the floor so they can all be together. In the winter, the tile floor can get really cold. I want to have carpet squares so we can use different configurations and so my students can stack them in a corner when we are finished.
No matter how young the scientists are, they need a comfortable place to work and learn.
I want my room to be an inviting place where they can enjoy being independent scientists who ask questions, make observations, and draw conclusions. By donating these materials to my classroom, you are helping me create a space where I can foster my students' love for inquiry and science.
