Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an inner city, Title I school in Los Angeles. My students are very eager to learn and have their eyes on going to college, even though most of their parents are not college educated, and in some cases, may not even be formally educated. They are just developing and awareness of themselves and the world, and these next couple of years are key for them to grow into confident and resilient learners.

The sixth-grade experience is so formative for students that it is crucial that they have positive and enriching experiences to nurture their passion for education.

Math and science are often the gatekeepers for many of the lucrative careers of these times, so it is paramount that they have the resources and quality instruction to give them access to the content and future success.

My Project

It is hard to have good discussions across the room and behind a desk. Students tune out, don't feel connected, and only a few participate. But when you reduce the space and bring students together in a circle, something magical takes place: discussion becomes rich and learning blossoms. Research shows reflective and analytical discourse is the key for students to attain higher level understanding. Research also shows that forming close circles is the most effective for learning talks, however, this is most often not practical with the space and furniture we are given in traditional schools. These stackable stools will allow us to regularly engage in circle talks and Socratic seminar which will increase the instructional rigor and student interest. Such a simple thing, like having light and movable furniture, gives us the flexibility to create and recreate more personally connected learning spaces within the confines of our room to greatly enhance student learning.
