My students would love to have weekly student newspapers written at their various reading levels so that every Friday afternoon we can enjoy a mug of "coffee" (water or juice!) relax and enjoy reading about current events.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Wagner's classroom raised $275

Hello! I am a 2nd grade inclusion teacher at a Chicago Public School on the north side of the city. Our school is small - with only one class in each grade and we form a close school community. Many of my stuents speak English as the Second Language and many of my students also have learning disabilities.
Many of my students speak English as their second language. Most people meeting them for the first time would never imagine that they speak English as their second language - their social language skills in English are right on! However, academically they have a much more difficult time reading and comprehending the English language.
As much as possible, I try to link my reading and writing curriculum so that they reinforce each other. I am writing this proposal to ask for kid-friendly news resources for our classroom so that my kids can become familiar reading, obtaining information from, and enjoying the newspaper. Only a handful of my students have parents who receive the newspaper at home! So having these resources in my classroom would be the only opportunity for many of my students to see and read information in a newspaper format.
I have also asked for coffee mugs so that reading the newspapers in class while enjoying a cup of "coffee" or water or juice! I want all of my students to learn to ENJOY reading and relaxing with the newspaper!
By reading and reviewing issues of these student-friendly newspapers, we can begin to learn about the characteristics of non-fiction text such as headlines, subtitles, photo captions, bullet points and information boxes. These are all important reading skills the students can use throughout their academic journey to gather information.
Our next step in this project will be to write our own classroom newsletter! Through this activity the students will be able to engage in using and reinforcing the skills and ideas we have gained from reading the student-friendly news sources. My students always get so excited and engaged in activity and I know that they will LOVE writing articles to be printed and shared in a class newsletter!
In this proposal I have asked for a couple of different student-friendly newspapers. I have done this so that each student in my class will be sure to have an issue of a newspaper that matches their reading level. For example, I have asked for Kids Newsweek and two different grade levels of Weekly Reader. I will use these different issues to differentiate the activities for my struggling, average and advanced readers.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal! I appreciate it!
