Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

We are young adult students participating in an Adult Transition Program which is designed to help students who are between the ages of 18-22 and continue to qualify for special education support services. This is a unique educational program that focuses on five domains: independent living, career and vocational, recreation and leisure, social and interpersonal skills, and community connections. These students are amazing individuals who work diligently everyday to become the best versions of themselves. Our program strives to help all of our students achieve their lifelong goals and become active participants in their communities.

The students have worked hard to make a proposal for starting a coffee and tea delivery service at our school. They submitted their proposal to our principal and ASB and were approved. They will get first hand experience running a small business and the fun that goes with it. They will be purchasing supplies, such as Starbucks coffee and coffee creamer, preparing the orders, delivering the orders, collecting/counting money, cleaning up, and analyzing gains/losses. Students will be given real world opportunities to work on their customer service skills and work together as a team to accomplish a goal. The students are so excited to begin this endeavor. We have had weeks of lessons in the classroom to prepare for our opening day including taking the Efood Handlers Test. Students have notified staff via email about our upcoming service. The staff is enthusiastic about supporting this student run business.

In Their Own Words

We are so excited to learn how to run a coffee delivery service. We want to learn about customer service and making money. We want to improve our money counting skills too. Most of us need practice talking with other adults and using what we learn in class. We can't wait to start our business.

We work three days a week at different sites with a job coach, but this job is different because we get the chance to be our OWN boss. Older students will be paired with newer students to help them complete the job tasks. We will learn how to assign job tasks based on what we do best.

The money we earn will help pay for supplies so we can continue to provide this coffee service. Hopefully, we will make extra money so that we can use it to do some fun community based lessons. It will also help us to show the staff that we are hard workers and our program is important.
