My Students

Job skills come naturally to many students. My students are not so lucky. Since they are impacted by moderate to severe disabilities, the prospect of job opportunities in the future can be limited. I'm constantly looking for ways to help them learn to be independent and master life-long skills.

My students are part of a center-based classroom in a traditional middle school.

All of them are exceptional learners with moderate to severe disabilities including autism, Downs Syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. The focus of their curriculum is on "everyday" skills. While they attend electives with non-disabled peers, their core classes focus on more basic concepts and life-long skills.

My Project

Our "Everyday" social studies, math, and science curricula is based on life-skills concepts. This coffee shop will be open to teachers and staff daily. Job skills are a big focus for our social studies class. The coffee shop will teach real life job skills in a hands-on, interactive way. Making change and collecting money will address key concepts for the math program. Students with higher functional skills will learn to make a budget and track income and expenses. Our science students will use this coffee shop to follow recipes and study healthy food choices when creating the recipes for the smoothies we'll make with the Magic Bullet. The goal is to make the coffee shop self-sustaining but we need the materials to get it started! These resources will provide the opportunity for students to develop and practice life-long skills. They will also allow students to provide a service to the staff of the building and, in turn, will help foster feelings of self-worth. This is a C2i!

It is always a challenge to offer new lessons on skills to our center-based students.

The goal of the program is to increase their independence but, by the very nature of their disabilities, they are often quite dependent on others. The coffee shop will increase their independence, foster cross-curricular objectives and allow them the opportunity to really learn life-long skills to help them be successful in their lives!
