My students range in ability levels. I have Down's Syndrome, Autism and Learning Disabled. Most of them cannot count money or follow multi-level directions. I have two that are non-verbal and use sign language, technology and pictures to communication. Some are withdrawn and have no desire to attend school.
Most students have no reason to attend school due to bullying, lack of motivation and lack of resources.
This project will give them a reason to come to school to be part of a team.
My Project
My students will provide a coffee cart service to the school staff. They will learn how to count money, make coffee and serve pastries. They will clean the items, deliver items, work as a team, take orders and prep for the next day. Some of the daily tasks will include the following: Students will make coffee with the coffee makers, store the hot coffee in the carafes while using the carts to carry and sell to the staff that have ordered coffee and pastries. The consumable items, such as coffee, tea and sugar are to provide the hot drinks to sell. The carts and shelves will hold pastries and coffee condiments such as coffee, sugar, cups, creamer and tea bags. Students will collect money and count back change while delivering coffee.
The most important learning strategies in working the coffee cart will be my students' community involvement, building self-confidence and the handling of money.
These three strategies will empower my students in many life skills. I have found that most of my students in the last 10 years of teaching special education cannot count money. Being part of the team will inspire them and motivate them to learn how to count money. As an extra bonus, the service to staff members will help them to build trusting relationships with staff and teachers that may not ever be introduced to them otherwise.
The general education teachers and students will begin to recognize my students in their inclusion areas, helping my students adjust to bigger classrooms and establishing trust with other teachers. My hope is to generate friendships and recognition for my students. A benefit may be the reduction in bullying of special needs students as general education students will begin to understand what life is like for them.
