My Students

EMS is a Title I urban school located just east of downtown Charlotte, North Carolina. It is a part of the Beacon Learning Community. We have a diverse population with 808 students. The student demographics are 32.8% African American, 53% Hispanic, 8.5% Asian, 4% white, .7% multi-racial and .1% American Indian. Approximately 11.5% of our students are identified as students with disabilities (SWD) and 28.7% are identified as limited English proficient (LEP). We have a 1 to 1 computer ratio.

My Project

I have a classroom of 25 students who are eager to learn coding! In my classroom, STEM education is very important as I want to get students excited about subjects like programming, math and science. Our school participates in a program called "Hour of Code" in which students learned the basics of coding in order to make the Ozobots (robots) perform a specific action. My students were incredibly engaged with this activity, kept trying new codes, were being problem solvers, and did not want to stop!

Ozobots help inspire the next generation of computer scientists, engineers and inventors.

My students would greatly benefit from the Ozobot classroom experience on a weekly basis. The kids are crazy about them and can't get enough!

Ozobots are $50 dollars each. Once we have the Ozobots, all it takes is colored markers to create unique codes! We would like the funds as soon as possible so that we can implement a STEM coding center in our classroom immediately.
