My Students

As a teacher in a Title I School, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. One of the things that our school offers to students are classes after lunch, called LifeSkills. LifeSkills are a variety of classes that students choose and are taught by teachers. These classes are designed by teachers to teach students what they are passionate about outside of the academic classroom. Some of those offerings include cultural studies, knitting, golf, board games and others.

With all these challenges, my students continue to be eager learners and are willing to try new things.

Students enjoy these classes and many times are inspired by them. At the end of these classes, seeing students engaging in these classes, I see students who before may have thought that they can't do something or accomplish something new.

My Project

For many of my students, coding is a scary task. For them it seems like only geniuses can do it. But once they start to code and see that it is not that difficult and that it only requires patience and practice, many begin to enjoy it.

Earlier this year, my students were given the chance to explore with LEGO boost and what I realized is that they loved it.

The feedback that I received about the LEGO Boost was that it made the coding and programming that they did more visual. For many students, seeing and feeling what they have created is all that they need to keep on coding. As more students continue to take my course in coding, I want to continue to sustain more student interest in coding.

Having more LEGO boost kits along with the tablets in the classroom will allow me to continue to engage and reach more students.

One of the challenges that I have is that for my students who repeat my course I want to continue sustain their interest. By having the LEGO Mindstorms kit in the classroom, students can see where they are advancing to next.

With the help of these materials students can see the practical applications of coding and gain skills in this ever changing technological world.
