Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Queens, NY where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. They all come from many countries in Asia and Latin America. Many of my students do not have a chance to experience many extra-curricular activities. Most of them stay home or at the park after school is over. I want to be able to provide them with a different activity that is both engaging and fun.

Collaborative, interdisciplinary, and hands-on projects are the best way to teach the mathematics my students need to succeed in middle school, and using technology to do so will only enhance their learning experience.

Projects give students a reason to talk with one another and to outside audiences. The projects they get most excited about are those that are hands-on and technology related. They quickly learn a new language and learn to work together at the same time, but only if we have the right tools.

My Project

Learning computer programming empowers students to become creators of technology rather than simply consumers of technology. I believe that every student should have the opportunity to learn to code. This year, after I attended a coding workshop, I started introducing my students to a coding curriculum called Codesters. I was able to do so using the five free lessons that are part of the program. But in order to fully immerse my students into the world of coding, I need access to the full Codesters curriculum. For example, one of the Codesters lesson will enable my students to redesign our school's logo by overlapping different geometric shapes, characters and backgrounds. Also, they will create their own video games and by doing so learn how to locate points on a coordinate grid and even use the distance formula to find distances on the coordinate plane.

The donations to this project will help my students have access to a quality coding curriculum and Chromebooks that will improve their academics and expose them to computer science regardless of their access to technology at home.

This is one of the reasons I hope to obtain two Chromebook laptops, so that students who do not have access to a computer at home can do so in my classroom.

The last part of this project will be completed by having access to a printer and ink cartridges in the classroom so that students can showcase their finished products throughout the school year. Finally, this project will only be successful if students can practice the skills in the classroom and at home. That is why it is so crucial for them to have opportunities to practice coding, not only in the computer lab once a week, but in their mathematics classroom, every day.
