My Students
When you hear the word "kindergarten" what do you envision? More than likely, bright colors, a cozy rug and, of course, lots of toys and materials to use! Kindergarten is a year where there are a lot of "firsts" and the foundation for learning has begun.
For many of my students this is their first experience in a full day, structured classroom setting.
They love to play in centers to learn financial literacy through a grocery store, create in an art center, build in a block and game center, listen to stories on a computer and their favorite is to play teacher with my materials. However, there is one very important center that is missing from their classroom, a coding center.
My Project
Did you know that 5 of the 10 jobs on the Forbes list of the highest paying jobs require a knowledge of coding? As a teacher, it is not only my job but responsibility to expose my students to various career opportunities and to spark that interest. These robots, Dash and Dot, Bee-Bot and Ozobots will do more than spark their interest in coding but they will also begin to learn about robotics. My students will be able to work independently, with a partner or even with a group to program these robots to follow their every command. These robots will give my students the opportunity to collaborate, design, and engineer creations of their imagination. They will be able to see their code come to life in a real-world, hands-on way. What better way to learn to code than by actually doing and seeing? The best part is, as my students learn and grow, the robots can be used in more challenging ways! These robots will ignite my students' curiosity to learn how to code!
While learning to code, my students will be practicing the essential skills of collaboration, communication and digital literacy.
Digital literacy is a crucial skill for 21st century learners, however, the tools needed to teach these skills are missing from our classroom.
