Coding & Robotics: Building on Strengths of Autism
My students need hands-on coding materials to help them make the transition from just reading about coding and robotics to actually learning how to do it.
My school is made up mostly of children with autism or other special needs. In my library, I serve children from 9th to 12th grade at various points on the autism spectrum.
Reading level and social skills vary drastically across the student population making it essential for them to have a safe space in which to explore books, study and socialize with one another.
My hope is to provide them with such a place. A place to draw them in, where they can express themselves and discover new books and other media.
My Project
These coding and energy kits will give my students an opportunity to take information they read about and learn real world application. The attention to detail as well as many other skills required to code and program robots are great strengths for many of my students. These are materials that most of my students will never have access to at home so access at school is critical for them.
Having these materials will allow my students to excel at something that they have great interest in and provide them the skills needed to be successful in a technological world.
By coding these cubelets, they will be able to leave the school with marketable skills that will help them whether they choose college or joining the workforce. The energy kit will allow them to explore alternative energy sources that they can apply to their robotics and coding.
