Coding Materials to Spark Students' Critical Thinking!

My students need Stand-Up Magnetic Write & Wipe Center, Bee-Bot Programmable Robot and Create-A-Path Magnetic Center to code so they can build their capacity for critical thinking and be successful in a digital world.

My Students

Bright, imaginative, energetic, enthusiastic, loving, and well…crazy are just a few of the words I would use to describe my students. I teach Kindergarten in a Title 1 elementary school in Virginia. What is a Title 1 school? Being a Title 1 school means that the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast. Teaching in a Title 1 school comes with many challenges. Quite often our school is the most stable and positive environment for the children in our community.

I want my students to become explorers, writers, readers, mathematicians and more!

I work hard to create a classroom community that is positive and inclusive. I plan engaging lessons that inspire my students to be active learners. When my students walk into my classroom, I want them to feel safe, loved, and valued. In an ever changing world, I hope to instill a love for learning that continues to blossom throughout my students’ lives.

My Project

I am asking for new coding and critical thinking materials for my classroom. I want to use the Bee-Bot in class to incorporate coding into my math and literacy workstations. A critical objective for kindergarten is retelling a familiar story including characters, setting, and important story events. What would be more fun than retelling a story using a Bee-Bot? Students could lay out pictures and simple text from the story and code the Bee-Bot to navigate to each part of the story in the correct sequential order!

Creating opportunities for critical thinking is imperative to the future success of today's youth.

My students will use the "Create-A-Path magnetic center" and "Engineer-A-Coaster activity kit" to design and test 3D structures. Both activity sets have magnetic backing, so they will work perfectly with the "Stand-Up Magnetic Write & Wipe center." Using the "Create-A-Path magnetic center," students will work collaboratively with a partner to design a continuous tunnel for a set of foam balls to travel through. Using the "Engineer-A-Coaster activity kit," students will learn how the track position affects the disk—as it rolls and falls from track to track and into the goal box! Both activities will challenge my students to stretch their thinking to find new ways to accomplish their goals.

Technology changes our lives everyday. By introducing my students to coding and providing fun new opportunities for critical thinking, I am preparing them for future careers that don't even exist yet!
