My Students

My students attend a tough, inner-city school where 98% of the population receives free lunch, and 75% of their families receive AFDC assistance.

Many of my students dream of being engineers but don't have the technology at home that would enable them to learn about programming and coding.

My project, Coding Jam,, will give my students the opportunity to experiment with coding in our music classroom during the school day using software that provides real-time results, encouragement, guidance, and fun.

My Project

The Osmo Coding Jam and Genius Kit will provide my students with the tools they need to learn about coding through sequencing and patterns. The software will guide, prompt and engage the students as they enter exciting new worlds where they will control characters and sounds to compose music. The hands-on building blocks are kid-friendly and use arrows to indicate left, right, up and down. These coding patterns coordinate with musical sounds moving upward and downward, making the creation of music easy, but also interesting and engaging. The program offers the students encouragement, guidance, and rewards all along the way so learning feels like a game. Once their "jams" are complete, they can easily be shared with others.
