Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth grade scholars are eager to learn and have been doing a fantastic job during distance learning with limited resources. They are eager to continue their engineering coding practices at home. This presents a challenge, as most of my students do not have access to supplies in their homes.

The majority of our students began the school year not understanding the different specialty opportunities that exist in science.

But students were motivated as we kicked off the year with Chemical Matter. We had just began our Engineering unit before the school closure. Since the beginning of the year, our students have made outstanding progress and gains. They are in desperate need of engineering opportunites that they cannot get at home. They would benefit from a variety of classroom science resources to help them continue with their success in science during our newly distance remote learning platform.

My Project

Since the start of the school year, our scholars have been fully committed with learning engineering through coding. This includes writing observations and making predictions about their findings, comprehension questions and discussions. As we entered distance learning, we have exhausted our science opportunities. We are in desperate need of engineering opportunities.

Right now, the majority of my students do not have any engineering opportunities, and rely on online resources for their reading materials about engineering and unfortunately, online resources often do not allow for students to engage in hands-on experiences.

I would LOVE to give my students an opportunity to provide engineering lessons through Zoom Conference each week, much like we did when we were in the classroom.

I know my students will love this new addition to our distance learning and Zoom meetings. They will then have the opportunity to discuss the coding process, followed by observing the coding segments they created. I also hope this will entice them to want to continue to be interested in the engineering field.
