Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a wonderful community of thinkers, communicators, collaborators, and contributors. Each and every member of our faculty work to educate the whole child and improve the school community through various means. One very important example is our 23 raised bed garden beds. Our school garden utilizes all students to help prepare, plant, and maintain. In return, it provides fresh fruits and vegetables for our students and their families throughout the growing season.

Our students originate from at least 15 different countries and speak at least 6 different languages.

Ninety-seven percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school provides a safe place for students and a wealth of resources for families including clothing, food, and assistance with billing, housing, and medical care. It is an amazing place to grow and learn.

My Project

We currently have 2 aging Code-a-pillars in our STEM classroom. These are used to introduce students to coding. The students can see exactly what code the robot is performing and allows them to synthesize their thinking to get the Code-a-pillar to the goal. With class sizes up to 24 students, not everyone gets a chance to try their idea.

These Code-a-pillars would allow my students to work in much smaller groups and get more hands-on time in learning how to code.

Coding is a skill that allows students to practice their problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as prepares students for the careers of the future!
