My Students

My students love to explore science-based apps in my classroom. Whether it is an animal simulation, a bottle-flip challenge, or a drawing program, just about every student will choose a computer app when ten minutes of free-time happens.

This project aims to discover what my students can do with a free-time choice that requires them to code a robot of their choosing, or a game application of their own design.

Do I think this project is vital for all students, from kindergarten to 8th-grade? You bet I do!

My Project

Why are these materials important to my own classroom? Because all of my students are already actively engaged with these kinds of computer programs, both at school and at home. The problem is, these kinds of computer programs are passive, the coding work is already done for them.

The goal of this project is simple: actively engage all of my students in the process of computer coding!

Of the five robotic tools in this project, three are physical robot kits; all of these kits may be manipulated by students to perform a dizzying range of physical tasks.

The remaining two items of this project focus directly on computer coding. One of these items supports students who wish to create their own, on-the-spot game program. The other item allows much younger students to create simple, touch-based activities, without the coding requirement.

Best of all: our classroom already has the tablet computers we need to operate these items. We are, literally, ready-to-go!
