Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my schools are consistently eager to learn and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom. Our students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home. Outside of school, our students are often met with low expectations simply because of environmental and socio-economic factors, which they cannot control.

What our students can control is their enthusiasm, their effort, and their resiliency, and these qualities are regularly on full display in school.

I am continually impressed by how the majority of our students approach challenging tasks, and eagerly apply a range of skills and creativity to solve novel problems.

STEAM is one of the most relevant and applicable areas of learning for students today, since so many of the jobs that will be available in their futures require these skills and knowledge. Our students are the next generation of innovators and engineers! We need to provide them with opportunities to develop the innovative thinking and problem-solving skills that they will need to be successful.

My Project

As a technology integration coach, I work with teachers and students in grades 1-4. One of my goals is to increase students' access to STEAM experiences; hands-on tasks to engage in innovative creative thinking and collaborative problem solving. Our students need more opportunities to develop the 21st century skills, such as coding, that they will need in order to be successful in their future careers.

The Sphero Spark and Mini robots are favorite choices for my students--from fourth-grade coders down to my youngest students who have just started to learn to code.

The new Sphero Coding Mat and terrain park accessories will provide even more opportunities to make real-world connections to coding. The mat features a town that can be incorporated into coding lessons in many different ways, and through many different content areas. I am especially excited for the opportunity to make social studies connections for our first grade students who are learning about their community and maps.

Coding and robotics activities motivate and engage students. They learn to collaborate and communicate, to persevere towards a challenging goal, to take risks and continually revise their thinking, all while experimenting with new technology--and they are eager to do it! It has been very exciting to see how the older students model this innovative spirit for their younger peers--and how eager the younger students are to take risks and experiment with the robots!

The robot accessories I am requesting will be utilized in classrooms, during STEM blocks in our lab, and in our afterschool Robotics Clubs. Students will develop higher order critical thinking and creative problem solving skills. They will improve their abilities to collaborate and work as a team. They will learn how to use technology to improve lives and solve problems.
