My Students

K-5th love coming to the iPad Lab where we learn how to increase skills like Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation using iPads. I incorporate Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and friendly Communication into the framework of our project based learning. iTeach with iPads!

I teach 1100 students each week in grades K-5th in our new iPad Lab.

I had the vision for the iPad Lab a few years ago because our school is a Title One school and most families do not have access to smart devices in their homes. I was teaching in our regular computer lab and asking general questions about smart technology and the students had no response at all. I would often worry that if we didn't teach the students smart technology would anyone ever teach it to them? Were we creating an educational gap if we sent them on to Middle School without ever touching a tablet? Is it fair to miss out on technology just because your income level does not allow for your family to purchase one? Thankfully my wonderful principal agreed with my concerns and vision and used school funds to purchase our 40 iPads that all 1100 student share on a rotating basis in my room once a week! The program is a Huge Success and the students love creating digital projects in the iPad Lab!

My Project

This school year we all K-5th learned how to CODE using code.org celebrating the hour of code. The students loved learning code so much that we extended this lesson to a month long unit on learning how to code. We finished the lessons on code.org and moved on to creating educational math games for the grade below using ScratchJr and we continue to practice our skills using Apps like The Foos and Lightbot. I would like to continue to use our coding skills with a real life extension where the students use code to program the robot to help complete simple tasks in the iPad Lab.

I feel it is important to teach skills and standards but also give my students a real life application.

I encourage my students to consider different fields as they grow up and look for a job opportunity they enjoy and are interested in doing long term. I want to open doors for them that they may not know are even available. I want to end the cycle of just looking at a job opportunity for the monetary gain and encourage my kids to find something that excites their brain and makes them happy!
