Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students targeted for this grant are logical thinkers who have heard about the multitude of jobs available to computer programmers and are up for the challenge. These students, for the most, part come from low-income, minority homes. Many are immigrants or the children of immigrants so learning a computer language will be the third language they will learn.

The majority of students come from Spanish-speaking countries, although we also have African and Middle Eastern students as well.

As a cauldron of society, our school is placed directly in the middle of two sides of our neighborhood. One side is filled with government poverty housing; the other side sports million dollar homes. Up until this year, the wealthier parents have sent their children elsewhere, but they have banded together and are sending a group of students this year. Despite this group of students, our free and reduced percentage will still be over 90%.

My Project

These 30 seats in the advanced levels of Code Combat will be one of the first steps in the self-directed, life-long learning journey of skills acquisition for the young people discovering their talents and desires. 100 percent of my students will have access to the first free level. It is during this level where some students find their passion for solving this coding puzzle. Students who do find computer coding to be a brain challenge that fuels their excitement for learning, they will be given access to the next five levels.

In these levels, they will be programming in Python using actual syntax instead of blocks or other pseudo coding structures.

There are several free sites where students can learn Python, but after using them last year, I know that Code Combat is engaging and will help my students on their way to AP Computer Science proficiency as well as into jobs in which they will always be employed.
