This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

After a year of student-teaching and getting my Master's in Teaching from UC Berkeley, this is my first year as a full time teacher. I will be teaching 10th grade computer science at a high-school located in Fruitvale Oakland. Our school is entirely project based - meaning that students will learn computer science by building meaningful, ambitious projects of their own. For instance, in the second semester, the capstone project will be building a mini self-driving car. Our school also values getting students outside of the classroom, so students will have the opportunity to visit a self driving car company and drive in a real one in real life as a part of this project. However, before all of that, the first semester will be devoted to students building their basic programming skills. I would love to get students to just play with code by programming a (heavily scaffolded) app that will control the lights in our classroom.

This project will fund the classroom supplies and decorations that students will go on to program an app for (and maybe even a Slack integration).

Specifically, the Govee lights will be used for this project. Until we actually build the skills to program them ourselves though, they will also help make the space feel like a fun computer science classroom! The other materials in this project are supplies needed for classroom organization and project organization throughout the year.
