My Students

"An organized classroom will create organized minds," said my mentor teacher nearly 25 years ago. It was sage advice that I was fortunate to receive at the beginning of my teaching career. I pack in as many learning opportunities as my classroom space allows, so organization is key!

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Aside from the 3-4 adult-led activities, my classroom has 15 independent centers that change with each new theme. Our time is limited and so is our space, so the key to maximizing each child's access to the various learning experiences is organization. My young students need easy access to materials, supplies, and books to promote independence, decision-making, and responsibility as they begin to take charge of their learning.

My Project

I'm requesting a Spacemaker Storage Unit with bins in order to continue the organizational overhaul of my classroom. Through the generosity of Donors Choose, I recently acquired a mobile book organizer and a 20-compartment cabinet and they have transformed my classroom! I am able to group books by category in a way that makes sense to my students thereby empowering them to effectively take charge of keeping our small space tidy and organized. The well-being of my students is another factor. The majority of my cabinets and bookshelves were in dismal shape when I acquired them over 20 years ago. My husband kindly brought them home, sanded, painted, & finished them, but eventually something had to give! Their shabby condition is not only an eyesore, but a safety hazard. Splintering wood and chipping paint don't say, "Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten!"

The beginning of a new school year is the perfect time for a fresh start.

I'd like to offer a classroom environment that is aesthetically appealing, conducive to academic achievement, and safe. The addition of this storage unit with bins will welcome students and promote learning.
