Clothing for Warmth and Protection Against the COLD!

My students need warm sweatshirts in different sizes and materials that they would be comfortable wearing. They frequently talk about sports figures they admire who wear sweatshirts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need warm sweat shirts to wear over t-shirts as the weather changes into the cold and raw wind filled winter.

We are a vibrant Special Education High School community with special needs students, and some homeless with severe multiple disabilities.

Students 12 to 21 years old and their families live in the Heart of Harlem New York or surrounding neighborhoods. Over half of the student population are English as New Learners (ENLs).

One of our greatest challenges is bringing clothing resources to our school homeless and shelter population as many students do not have warm winter clothing.

Our goal is to insure every student has sufficient items to see them through the changing season with appropriate clothing. We would like to offer "our kids" the opportunity to wear clothing in their sizes. The chosen inventory was selected to meet multiple student sizes and needs. Students with insufficient funding or housing options would be able to wear items based on fit and their own preferences as opposed to cost. When you have students living in the Heart of Harlem you realize they need to persevere through many physical obstacles.

My Project

Our students, many homeless who live in shelters and come from families with many needs, do not have jackets or clothing for protection in the cold/rain.

It is difficult to see our students come into the building wearing only t-shirts or a thin shirt when the weather is cold.

Many of our parents come to school and ask staff including Teachers and Administrators for assistance in obtaining clothing. Their children leave the house without jackets or sweaters, and many have asthma or medical issues which are impacted by lack of outer garments or jackets.

We are requesting sweatshirts in different sizes and materials. We also have some students, who due to their clothing requirements, cannot find clothes in their size. I ordered multiples of sweatshirts for a specific student who literally has very few pieces of clothing in her wardrobe.

It is a very precious thing to be able to hand a package of clothing to a student and see their smiles and joy. It is even more wonderful to see them the next day in school wearing their new and clean clothes. However, the best part is knowing "our kids" are being provided with the sweatshirts and items needed to withstand the rain and cold.
