This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Teacher, I have never used a computer." Unfortunately I have heard this way too often. My students are falling behind in this digital world. They need the experience and exposure to using computers and how to create products.
I teach a third grade bilingual class in a low income school district where there is approximately a 40% dropout rate.
Our school is a "Micro-Society" school where our students create a "society" of their own and build connections between the classroom and real life.
In communities like ours, everyday, the gap of the digital divide is widening. Our students need to prepare for real life experiences and situations. They need the tools that will allow them compete in this fast paced global society. Our schools are falling way behind because we lack the technology that our students need to develop.
My students' micro venture is called Digital Wonders. They take orders from the other ventures to create advertisements, business cards, address labels, print envelopes etc... On "market days" they turn the classroom into a photo studio and take pictures. They print them out and deliver them to all their "customers" in the school.
My Project
The laptop computer will give them the ability to move around in the classroom and work in groups to work on their venture. They will be able to market, write up a business proposal and edit the photos that they take through their "digital wonders" venture. The printer will allow them to print out all their products such as advertisements and photos. A laptop computer and printer in my classroom will open up a world of experiences to my students. They will be able to run a business from start to finish with the tools provided.
Our students need the exposure to technology.
My students need the experience to compete in the global society. They will feel more comfortable being able to use the printer and computer without the restrictions of being stuck to one station. We will greatly appreciate your donation.
