Closing the Achievement Gap Through Orton-Gillingham Training
I need support attending a professional development training that will equip me with practical strategies for teaching reading to students with special needs. And, in turn, help close the reading gap for my students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are happy and very motivated. They love to learn and explore new topics. They are curious and independent thinkers! They are always eager to participate in class. Furthermore, they are supportive and kind to one another, and often encourage each other in class.
My Project
Orton–Gillingham was the first teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. The highly structured approach introduced breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds and then building on these skills over time. It also pioneered the “multisensory” approach to teaching reading, which is highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia. This means that instructors use sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help students connect language with letters and words. I know my students would benefit tremendously from this multisensory and explicit approach when learning how to read.
