Close Readers Read Like Detectives!

My Students

I currently teach in a 5th grade self-contained special education classroom in Mount Vernon, New York. The students in my class are all special in their own way. Therefore, their learning needs are all different as well. Throughout our day we engage in computer time, small group work, whole group, and 1 to 1 teaching. In our class we live by the motto "All students can learn and succeed, but not in the same day in the same way".

My Project

For this project, I am asking for supplies to teach my students how to become close readers. From my work with these students in the past, I know that they do well when using a highlighter when reading to highlight the important parts of a text. They also benefit from using dry erase markers to indicate words that they may not know in order to research the word. Although my future students are going to be in 5th grade in the fall, many of them are not reading at that level YET. I am asking for books that are about relevant topics in order to get them engaged with the reading process!
