Close Encounters of the Critter Kind: Beetle Edition
Help me give my students an up close and personal bug experience! Featuring some live bessbug pets, a bug habitat, microscope attachment for our iPad, and some bug catching supplies, our science learning will be epic!
This is my fifth year teaching first grade after 12 years teaching 4th and 5th grade. I love how first graders are inquisitive and enthusiastic learners! Each day they come to school prepared to give 110%! Our classroom learning community values all diversity and celebrates each others' uniqueness.
Every child knows he/she is special and can explore their future career path in my classroom - the next great scientist, writer, engineer, or future entrepreneur's start might be right here in my classroom!
They are the future, so I hope to set them up for life long success!
My Project
Every year, I try to find new and innovative ways to help science come alive for my first graders. What better way than invite some insect ambassadors into our classroom for an up close and personal bug experience? Our science unit on bugs will truly come alive with the addition of some real live bessbug friends!
It's not everyday students can learn about animal adaptations by actually examining friendly bugs, but with this project, students will not only meet some beetle friends, but also use a microscope to examine and document our bessbug adventure!
Understanding how bessbugs are an integral component of our natural world will also help students value insects and seek to be inquisitive about bugs in nature... instead of view them as something to squash underfoot!
In addition to providing our classroom with bess bugs and a habitat materials (Lee's Kritter Keeper & EPAuto bottle sprayers) to keep them healthy and happy, this project will also supply us with some tools to safely examine other bugs in their natural habitat! Items like the Insect Bug Adventure Set and the Carson BugView Quick-Release Bug Catching Tool will allow us to catch and examine bugs on our nature trail and around the school yard. The Jiusion WiFi USB Digital Handheld Microscope will allow students to document all our critter adventures. It's going to be an exciting year in our classroom with this engaging project!
