My Students
Our school is open to children from two school districts. We serve approximately 555 students in grades PK-5. We have a racially diverse student body and dual language classes in both Spanish and French. Minority enrollment is 69% of the student body (majority Hispanic and Black), which is more than the state average of 55%. The reading and writing scores of low-income students at this school are above the state average for low-income kids, but they're still below the state average for all kids. Teachers are hard working and dedicated to ensure that our children are challenged academically and respected as individuals. Students feel a sense of community and are encouraged to work collaboratively and to also do their personal best.
My Project
Students in grades three through five use peer feedback forms in order to improve their performances and to increase their fluency in musical vocabulary. The peer feedback form guides their interactions while working with a peer which helps them develop solo, duet and whole group playing and singing skills as well as interpersonal and communication skills. The peer feedback forms are instrumental in improving their playing and helps them incorporate musical vocabulary in order to clarify what they needed to do. After listening to a partner and giving feedback, students are able to set goals for themselves and determine how they needed to practice.
However, in the music classroom, there are no tables or desks which leaves students only their laps, chairs or the nearest piano to use as a hard writing surface.
I have cut up some old binders and bought a few clipboards but it isn't enough and a class set of clipboards is rather expensive.
I would love for my students to have a matching set of real clipboards and pencils to use for their writing assignments.
