My Students

Ready? Begin! Readers use timers to measure and improve their reading fluency, just as runners time themselves to improve their running speed. Clipboards are simple tools that become magic in a classroom. Working on the floor may seem dull until you tell students they get to use clipboards.

My students are inquisitive, engaging 4th graders.

These amazing young people bring their cultural backgrounds into our class of learners to create a diverse classroom community. I teach in a school where most students are from low-income families and receive free or reduced price meals. Supplies are provided by the school or the teacher to make sure students have what they need to learn. We are a public magnet school with both upper elementary and middle school students. Our 3rd through 8th graders and their families choose to attend this school and be a part of our wonderful small school learning environment.

My Project

These clipboards will replace the worn out, aging clipboards we currently have. They have had a good life and have been so heavily loved that many are missing the rubber grips on the clip part that help hold papers down, while others are simply so used that the corners have worn off and they no longer provide support to a full sheet of paper. The digital timers will be used for fluency practice. It is important for students to learn to read fluently, with accuracy and expression. For our students, many of whom are English learners, they need to hear examples of good reading in order to practice it themselves. As they listen and read a text multiple times, their fluency begins to improve. With the timers, they can measure their progress each day. Students in both 4th grade classes will benefit from these timers, since our classes switch back and forth for supplemental English lessons.

Using clipboards in the classroom gives us a great deal of flexibility, because they provide a hard, flat surface for writing so that students are not tied to their desks.

They can work around the room and on the floor, independently or in small groups, without putting a paper on the carpet or against their knees and poking pencil holes each time they try to write. With the timers, students will be able to independently monitor their progress for daily fluency reads.
