The new rock climbing team is excited to be able to climb the concrete walls of New York City and the mountainous hills upstate!! Our school is a select STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school in partnership with Columbia University. School is very important to our students but having other sports, such as rock climbing provides us new learning opportunities too!
The team is comprised of a group of novel, passionate, and dedicated, learners who travel from all over the New York City Metropolitan area to attend.
They are eager learners and excited to learn how to properly scale the diverse rocks together! They want to develop themselves as athletes, especially in a non-traditional sport, and growing themselves mentally and physically.
My Project
During the course of the year, students will learn how to safely belay a partner during top rope climbing. Students will also learn and practice many climbing techniques and skills with a focus on physical skills: feet placement, hand placement, body positioning, heel hooks, drop knees, etc; as well as the mental skills: awareness, risk tasking/management, maintaining focus during stressful moments, and breathing properly during a climb.
With this project, students will be able to get materials to help them learn how to do these skills safely (climbing instruction and facilitation, chalk, shoes).
Having instruction is so important so that students do not get injured or atrophy their muscles! Students will need special shoes to grip the rocks and chalk to decrease slipping. They will also be training for potential trips upstate for outdoor rock climbing and for rock climbing competitions.
