Climbing in the Classroom 2: Helping Autistic Students Regulate their Bodies

Help me give my students a Step2 Woodland Climber Playset for more opportunities to seek proprioceptive input in order to regulate their emotional and behavioral responses to sensory stimulation.

My Project

My students are incredible. They face many challenges daily, including: communication, sensory dysregulation, and are often misunderstood. My autistic students seek proprioceptive input in order to regulate their emotional and behavioral responses to sensory stimulation.

When my project is funded my students will have a space in the classroom where they can climb and play to their hearts content.

My students are constantly trying to scale the wall, bookshelves, tables and anything else they can find! This Step2 Woodland Climber II Playset helps them to meet their sensory needs. We have moved to a smaller classroom and our other climber is too big, but has been an invaluable resource in our class. The large one will be placed in an area where multiple disabilities classes are able to benefit from it.

The constant need to climb and jump is part of who they are and helps them to calm and creates an increased awareness of their surroundings. This will allow them to grow more in their time at school!
