This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade science students in a high poverty, urban area. The end of the year is devoted to environmental issues, which is very relevant since the surrounding area by our school is abandoned factories, unable to be redeveloped because the land is contaminated.
Students have a real-world need to understand climate change as well as earth's resources as this directly impacts their lives now. They do not have texts that talk about current science in these areas. Reading improvement is a goal for our school, so having these texts would both help students learn the science concepts as well as practice reading skills.
Sally Ride, the astronaut had direct input on the requested texts, which will add an appeal for student reading interest. The two sets of books consist of 8 each of 4 different titles per set. The books include information on climate change and what can be done, as well as conservation of earth's resources. These books will be valuable research for students as they formulate goals and an action plan for caring their local community environment. Students will be able to work in teams to read all four titles on each subject and them use their share their learning with the group to then combine research and come with a plan (per group) on how to positively affect their community environment.
This project will engage students in reading for a purpose as they learn solid science facts on climate change and earth's resources. It will help open their eyes to the reality of what's happening and help motivate them to become actively engaged in helping to solve problems and prevent further problems.
