Climate Action: Media Literacy for Low Incidence Learners

Help me give my students a graphing calculator and a weather and climate kit.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Alexander's classroom raised $258

My Project

My classroom is a vibrant space where students with low incidence disabilities, including those with significant intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and autism spectrum disorder, explore the world around them. What I love most about my students is their unwavering curiosity, their unique sensory experiences, their incredible perseverance, and their capacity for understanding when information is presented in accessible and engaging ways. They may communicate and learn differently, but their desire to connect with and understand their environment is just as strong. They teach me every day about different ways of perceiving and interacting with the world, and I am committed to providing them with meaningful learning opportunities that build on their strengths

In our Media Studies classroom, we strive to empower students to become active and informed citizens.

Understanding climate change is crucial for their future, and media plays a powerful role in shaping our perceptions of this critical issue. This project aims to provide my students with accessible tools to explore climate change through hands-on data collection and media engagement, fostering their understanding and potentially inspiring future advocacy.

This project will directly address these challenges by providing two key resources: Texas Instruments TI-84 PLUS Graphing Calculator with EasyData App: This powerful tool, paired with a temperature probe (which we will seek through additional, smaller donations or utilize existing school resources if possible), will allow my students to directly collect real-time temperature data in our school environment. The Lakeshore Meet the Standards Weather & Climate Kit provides a wealth of multi-sensory and hands-on materials specifically aligned with weather and climate concepts.

Your generous donation will help my students discover climate change in a meaningful and hands-on way and it will empower students with low incidence disabilities to learn about a vital global issue. Thank you for your consideration
