Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The computer lab is a very popular place in our school. Our students are eager to learn how to be good digital citizens and use new educational websites to improve their skills in reading and math. Many students sign up for our after-school programs involving our computers and parents sign up to be well-versed in online learning. For many of our students and thier families, the computer lab is the only place that they have access to internet, besides our local public library.
Our school’s nearly 600 students from Pre-K to 5th grade are mostly English language learners who come from low-income homes.
The cultural make-up of our school is as follows: 90% Latino (Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Ecuador), 8% are African or African-American; and 2% are Asian or Polish. More than half of our students are part of after-school programs that allow them to be active, express themselves on stage, or develop their skills in reading, writing and math.
My Project
Our entire lab is in dire need of an upgrade. Some of our headphones are broken and the wires are frayed. Many computer mice no longer click and have stopped working. Visitors are often unplugging equipment and plugging it back in with the hopes that all will be refreshed.
My 21st century learners deserve updated equipment.
When visitors to the computer lab place headphones over their ears, they don't expect them to fall apart. When they place a hand on the mouse and move it to the left, they don't expect the cursor to stay still. New headphones and computer mice will make a difference in my students' learning and improve their school lives by eliminated the lag time between what they learn and what they can do. Students will be able to participate in lessons smoothly. Visitors will be able to seemly utilize our school's equipment with confidence and speed.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
