American History plus technology equals enjoyable learning! I teach fifth grade American History at a school in Michigan. One of my main goals as a teacher is to constantly raise student achievement. Most of the students are at-risk and live in poverty. Many of the students exposure to technology is limited to when they attend school. Our school is making strides to incorporate more technology in our everyday teaching and learning.
I have worked with many students who have underperformed or simply had a lack of motivation in class. When I took these students to the computer lab to complete an assignment, they simply shined. The fact that the lab is shared between 22 teachers means our visits are limited. So the issue I face is how to bring that same motivation into the classroom on a daily basis?
The solution is simple. We need a multimedia projector. We already have three out of the four necessary components. We have a computer, a screen for presentations, and a class set of electronic remotes (clickers). The clickers allow students answer questions, complete assignments, quizzes, tests, games, and participate in class discussions with motivation and confidence. Without the projector, students would not be able to see any of these. Students love to participate because their answers are only seen by the teacher. So, they feel it's okay for everyone to participate. Active participation from all students will lead to an increase in learning and student achievement.
