This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I started kindergarten I couldn't read, but I knew it was my name when I saw my picture next to it. I am a kindergarten teacher teaching in a high - need community with children who are at the beginning of their learning careers.
At the beginning of the school year, most of these four- and five-year-olds are unable to read or write their names. On the first day of school I take pictures of the students and put the pictures all over their supplies and books. They need to see pictures of themselves to see that the name next to it is theirs.
With a digital camera in the room, I will be able to take the pictures of the students from the beginning when they are unable to read their names, straight through the first year of learning. By the end of the year, the kids are reading not only their names, but the books and environment that surrounds them.
With your help and support for this project, the students in my kindergarten class will get their first glimpse of reading. It starts with a click and a smile, then they will be able to read the world.
