A class with many holes in their reading needs help filling them in!
Currently, I am teaching a reading class aimed at helping students with learning disabilities. The students have severe deficits in both reading comprehension and decoding. They also range in age from 9th grade to 12 grade. Getting them to pick up a novel and read is tough! The school I teach at is a low socioeconomic school and the students often have other things on their minds while at school. Getting them engaged in a novel that is interesting and at their reading level is key for them to continue to grow in their academics.
The current reading program for my students is a read and repeat program. The students have complained that the work seems elementary and they want to do more. They seemed excited about reading a novel when I suggested it. Now my task is to get them the supplies they will need to soar to new reading heights.
It's important to get my students a novel that will keep their interest, while allowing them to succeed. Also, with personal cd players and the book on tape all of my students will be able to read the same book no matter what their deficit area! There are ten students, one teacher's assistant, and myself in the classroom. If we have twelve copies of the book and two copies of the book on tape, all students will be able to follow along and get the benefits of reading a novel. I believe that my students will connect with the characters in Holes and therefore will want to come to school to see what happens next in the novel.
