This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In 2012 I submitted my first Donor's Choose project for a classroom carpet! That lovely carpet has many stories to tell, unfortunately, some of the memories are stains that tell of other times and places.
My new students will be smart, fun, energetic, sweet, and amazing three to five year olds.
They will come to school eager to learn and ready to succeed. They are from predominately free or reduced lunch (approximately 96%) are predominately Latino and African American.
This year, I have the added bonus of co-teaching a blended special education program with pre-schoolers that have different learning abilities. Our classroom is full of diversity and it's amazing!
In a pre-k classroom the carpet is where learning happens and a clean carpet means students focus on the learning and not the spots on the carpet.
Our school is part of the Chicago Public School system which has seen heavy budget cuts in the last few weeks. Many of the schools in our part of the city have seen cuts of up to $600,000 or 10% of their operations costs. Many of these cuts have been to much needed custodians that keep our schools nice, comfortable, and clean.
My Project
As very young learners sometimes they need reminders and positive reinforcement. That includes when and where to use the restroom. The once new, and bright colored carpet, has become a dingy colored carpet.
With a carpet washer and hypoallergenic carpet shampoo I can wash the carpet once a month (or after accidents) and maintain a clean environment for my students. This will lead to more focused students who are ready to learn.
Since many of my students have allergies with this new carpet cleaner they will be able to breath cleaner air; sit in a clean and comfortable space, and the health of our classroom will be overwhelming fresher.
A clean carpet also means that students once again focus on the fun they have on the carpet.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
