My Students
My students are always eager to learn and excited about their mini engineering projects. They actively explore and engage in science and engineering through completing hands-on projects, where they research, built and test structures that include bridges, cars and safety contraptions. Students from all different levels collaboratively work to test their skills and ingenuity. They collaborate to engineer much needed product designs and construct them from everyday materials. They have recently taken on the community problem of lead pollution in water sources and want to investigate, design and possibly solve this issue using natural means. They want to design a portable device that can be used in emergency situations like areas that are hit by hurricanes.
My students are from diverse backgrounds: girls, minorities, immigrants, and students with disabilities.
We are a large school that serves 4,000 students; all from diverse backgrounds. Our school is the most diverse school in our state and we take pride in CARE-ing about our students. We believe that we should: C-Challenge students, A-Achieve academic excellence, R-Respect differences, E-Engage all students in the learning process.
My Project
There is a wide community problem with the amount of lead that is in our water system. Everyone is entitled to lead free supply of drinking water.
My students want to use the STEM fields to create a mechanism that will allow lead/ heavy metals to be remove from water using natural substance like fruit peels.
In this project, students will design and engineer a plumbing system using pvc piping. They will use chemistry to create different concentration of lead solutions. Using their science research skills, students will find the right combination of fruit peels and other substances that can natural remove lead/heavy metals from our drinking water supply.
