Clean Water for Our Classroom Pets

My project needs on-tap water filtration so that our pets in my science lab classroom have clean water; so our aquatic animals have clean, safe water to live in and so that other animals have clean drinking water.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Breitberg NBCT's classroom raised $421

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach science lab to 850 1st-8th grade students in the inner city. We currently have two sinks in our lab; but they are not filtered, so can only be used to clean up from activities including washing hands. We cannot drink this water or use it for washing dishes. This means it also is not a good source of water for our classroom animals. Students in 5th grade study the "change over time" of tadpoles to bullfrogs. They keep a journal, making entries weekly of their observations of the growth in the tadpoles. They also are responsible for the care and feeding of the tadpoles. Eventually students create graphs of the growth rates and compare tadpole change over time. They will also do the same with the frogs as they mature. In addition while doing these observation journals they will do some harmless tests of light levels and heat on the amphibians' environmental conditions. This too will be graphed and analyzed. This allows students to do the work of real scientists while seeing for themselves change over time; a "big idea" in science. The difficulty with having these animals in our room is getting enough clean water in a timely and safe manner. The only filtered water in the school is in the water faucets in the hallways. This is not a practical source for the tadpoles. We also have a class aquatic turtle and hermit crabs and fish that also require regular, fresh, clean water. Too much time is spent transporting water into our lab. This seems illogical since we do have a room with two sinks. A water filter on both sinks would greatly improve our ability to effectively care for our classroom pets. Filtered water in our classroom will also teach students the importance of caring about water quality for all life; including themselves. It will afford opportunities for discussions of environmental issues that affect them and other living creatures, like our classroom animals. These animals are observed by all 850 students as they come to the lab weekly for class; so in many ways this project will affect all students in the school. These filters also will make me feel more comfortable doing water based activities with the younger children during the year. In other words these filters will be well used and greatly appreciated.
