My students need more opportunities to have a positive impact. One we way we have achieved this goal has been "Clean-up Crew." On a weekly basis we walk the perimeter of the school cleaning up.
I teach in a 3-5 grade Behavior Focused, special education classroom. My kiddos have been identified for special education services because they struggle with emotional regulation and externalized (often violent) behaviors. They face challenges with impulse control, emotional awareness/regulation, and, in some cases, academic deficits. Many of these children come from backgrounds where they have faced poverty, trauma and abuse. Helping my students learn to function in society is beneficial not only to them, but to everyone they will encounter throughout their lives.
My Project
At Buckman Elementary we have an acronym for our school wide behavior expectations. ROARS stands for respect, ownership, attitude, responsibility and safety. Here are the ways in which your donations will help my students roar(s):
Respect: giving my kiddos the opportunity to show their respect for their school, community and nature.
Ownership: Clean-up Crew provides our students an increased sense of belonging through positive contribution.
Attitude: having their own garbage grabbers and buckets makes students more excited about clean-up.
Responsibility: teaching students to be caretakers for the environment.
Safety: having the right tools for the job decreases the risk of injury.
