Clean Sweep in Construction Class

Help me give my students an industrial floor sweeper to maintain a clean construction shop and anti-fatigue mats to reduce the stress on their feet and legs while standing long periods.

My Students

This is a challenging year for my students. As they battle the changes that a pandemic has brought into their lives, they have also attempted to maintain a sense of normalcy in their school day.

Construction class provides my high school students with a few hours each week in a non-traditional setting to get out of their seats with hands-on learning and opportunities to give back to their community.

As the first female trades teacher in our district, I'm excited to open this opportunity up to all students and am especially excited to help young women feel comfortable and confident learning construction skills.

My Project

Construction class is hands-on with sawdust and woodchips flying everywhere! The students love almost every minute of shop time in construction class. When do I hear those sighs of discontent? During cleanup, of course! Even with a dust collection system, the amount of sawdust, wood scraps, and other debris that collect on the shop floor can be more than a push broom can handle at times. Students also feel fatigued after standing for long periods on the hard concrete in front of the wood lathe or scroll saw. Fatigue adds to their lack of enthusiasm for wanting to jump in with that push broom.

By giving my students an industrial-sized sweeper and anti-fatigue mats, they will be able to sweep out the construction shop quickly and efficiently, creating a cleaner, healthier learning environment.

As students learn to be accountable and manage their learning environment, they are making a connection between safety and a clean, well-organized work area. This sweeper and anti-fatigue mats will help reinforce those lessons and just might even make cleanup a bit more fun!
